现在已经浮肿成这样了。。。  May 06 The first time to be a discussant: some tips to shareLast week, Arif asked me to be a discussant for his presentation which was going to take place today. To be honest, then I was not quite clear about what he has been doing. But, being sweet as always, I could hardly say 'no' to my colleague, especially when requested by such a nice person like Arif.
So I started (since yesterday) to study the sophisticated theories of pro-poor growth, absolute and relative deprivation, opportunity of mobility, and the famous fuzzy approach... Uffffff, finally managed to understand most of his work and completed my mission of being a discussant today. Although I prepared beforehand, many weaknesses popped up in the discussion. Here are some tips I summarized with my own experience today.
Some tips on choosing a discussant:
Invite someone who is familiar with your research to be your discussant.
Why? Because most of the 'others' have no idea what the hell you are doing. (Well, you may presume he/she knows but he/she actually doesn't. Don't believe it? Please refer to xixi's blog on the lonely Ph.D. life. http://rebecca7359.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!61C9220CBA15BB3B!245.entry) So you have to find such a person, who is the closest to your research soul among the candidates, to be your discussant. Otherwise the audience may easily be misled by your dear discussant, which of course, you would want to aviod.
More importantly, your discussant should have the ability to re-state your central argument for the audience.
The last thing you want to do, is to bore your audience. So you may need to find such a person, who is able to reformulate your point interestingly, briefly and clearly to rescue the audience at sea.
Last but not least, he/she should have a clear voice to say your idea, and say it loud! |
